As part of the policies of Promotion and Investment in Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency in the electricity sector of São Tomé and Príncipe, financed by the GEF through UNIDO, implemented by the Directorate General for Natural Resources and Energy, the first workshop for the Development and Application of Standards took place Minimum Energy Performance (MEPS) for lighting and appliances in São Tomé and Príncipe on January 21st, in the auditorium of the Brasil/S.Tomé training center.
This measure aims to contribute to the increase of national capacity in the acquisition of energy efficient appliances, in accordance with quality standards. To this end, the following consultancy activities will be carried out:
Development of a baseline assessment of market conditions, implementation and a compliance framework for lighting, air conditioning and refrigerators;
Development of Minimum Energy Performance Standards and conceptualization of a labeling program for lighting, air conditioning and refrigerators;
Elaboration of a regulation for the implementation and fulfillment of the deputies of the Parliaments and a program of labeling;
Training, Awareness Building, Workshops and Webinar.
This first mission arises in order to assess the basic conditions of the market regarding technical information on lighting and home appliances, most commercialized and used by the population at the national level.
It is expected with this work, to obtain a clear legal definition of the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and the conceptualization of a labeling program for these electrical equipment that allows:
Reduce the maximum demand for electricity and thus reduce the pressure on the electricity grid. Furthermore, the new electrification plans that are being developed will reach a higher percentage of the population and, consequently, will reduce the government's future public expenditure;
Reduce global electricity consumption and bills for consumers, who will spend a smaller fraction of their income on energy. This is especially important for low-income families, for whom the high price of electricity is an obstacle to meeting their basic needs;
MEPS and appliance labeling can serve as a powerful tool to inform consumers about differences in energy performance. This will direct consumers towards purchasing more efficient appliances.
